Do you need to make more money? If you said, “yes please”, you are in the right place.
No matter what you call it, side hustle, extra income, or gig economy, it's nice to earn some extra money. With more money you can:
- Pay down debt
- Build emergency savings
- Save for vacation fund
- Put away more for retirement
- Stop living paycheck to paycheck
I've put together a list of ways to generate additional income. Not all of them will fit your situation or skill set, but with a large list, there should be something that fits.
Answering surveys is a really easy way to make some extra cash. Questions can be answered anywhere, and it only takes a few minutes. Be careful, there are a number of scam sites. Here are a few reputable ones:
Swagbucks: Shop online, watch videos, search the web, and answer surveys to earn points. Points can then be redeemed for gift cards or cash back from PayPal.
InboxDollars: Take surveys, watch tv, shop, and more. Get paid for your input.
Vindale Research: Get paid to take surveys. They have samples of the surveys and how much each pays on their site.
Surf the Internet
Get paid to do searches on the web. If you like to surf the internet, you might as well get paid for it. Both Swagbucks and InboxDollars will reward you for your search activity.
Nielsen Digital Voice: Download the app to your computer, phone, or tablet. You can spend your time playing games, watching movies, listening to music, or on social networks. Get paid for all the time you spend online.
Swagbucks and Inbox Dollars both pay you to watch commercials and video clips, and then give your feedback. Sign up for these and make more money doing the activities that you already do.
Join Focus Groups
Focus groups can pay quite a bit better than surveys. Businesses looking for feedback, or testing a product, are willing to spend serious coin for information. I have personally participated in groups that have paid over $400 for a few hours time!
FocusGroup.com: Attend focus groups, online studies, or phone interviews, and earn $50-150 per hour.
This sounds counter-intuitive, but Butterfly Saves will give you cash back for just spending like you normally do online. Butterfly Saves is a Chrome browser extension that gets you cash back at thousands of online stores. Butterfly gets a commission for referring you to the store, and they give some of that back to you! Install it for free today to shop and earn cash!
You can also earn cash back from ibotta. With ibotta you choose your favorite rebates, purchase the products, take a picture of your receipt, and then get cash back! Right now you can also get a $10 welcome bonus when you redeem your first rebate.
Simply buy things that you were going to buy anyway and earn more money!
Become a Freelance Writer
If you love writing, earn more money as a freelance writer. There's a ridiculous amount of online content that needs to be created. Working part-time or full-time as a freelance writer can drive significant income.
Holly Johnson has a fantastic course called “Earn More Writing“, where she shares how she went from $0 to over $200k per year freelance writing! Her in-depth course teaches how to land jobs, discover what editors are looking for, and gives actionable advice to build your writing portfolio and earn more. Check it out here.
Start a Blog
Share your journey, skills, and expertise through a blog. You may be surprised to know that some bloggers make over 100k per month! While I don't think that is typical, you can definitely make money from blogging.
If you are interested in blogging, Six Figure Blogging is a great course to get started. Taught by Darren Rowse, from ProBlogger.net, and Andy Wibbels, author of Blogwild! A Guide for Small Business, Six Figure Blogging creates a blueprint to set up, drive traffic, and make an income from your blog.
Promote Products & Services (Affiliate Marketing)
Promote products that you have used, love, and believe in. Bloggers and online influencers can earn more money by promoting products to their audience. Curious how bloggers make so much money? This is one of the ways.
Personally, I learned the ins and outs of affiliate marketing through the course Making Sense of Affiliate Marketing. Michelle Schroeder-Gardner shares how she started blogging five years ago and now earns over $50k a month from affiliate marketing! Access her course here.
Start a YouTube Channel
Video games, music lessons, paintball games, golf lessons, etc name it and you can likely find it on YouTube. Teach, tutorial, or entertain. Attach ads, gain a little traffic, and make some money.
Drive for Uber or Lyft
Work when you want, for as long as you want. Uber and Lyft are great part-time gigs. Drive on nights, weekends, or whenever you like and earn some extra income. Drivers report earning $12-$25 per hour.
There are some requirements to become a driver:
Advertise On Your Car
Do you commute driving to work every day? Why not get paid for your windshield time? Have your car wrapped with ads and make money for the miles you drive.
Wrapify: States that you can earn $400-$600 per month just for driving!
Carvertise: Advertises that you could earn $300-$650 per campaign. Requires that the car is 2005 model or newer and that you drive 800+ miles per month.
Lease Your Car
If your car often sits idle, one option to make extra money is to lease it out. Peer-to-peer automobile lending can take advantage of all the time your car sits. One word of caution, even though a company advertises insurance coverage through them, check with your own insurance and state regulations prior to leasing your ride.
Turo: Says that you can cover your car payment by renting it out just nine days a month.
GetAround: Provides hourly and daily rentals. Insurance and roadside assistance included.
Deliver Food and Other Items
Make money on your own schedule delivering items.
Door Dash: In over 300 cities, deliver items or food whenever you want. Think of it as the Uber of food delivery.
Believe it or not, people still get newspapers. The ultimate morning person job, deliver newspapers before the rest of the world wakes up.
Pick up or drop off dry cleaning, take items to the Post Office, or take people's cars to get serviced while they are at work. Any errand that is a pain, is one that someone will pay you to complete.
Become a Virtual Assistant
Virtual assistants are in huge demand. VAs help manage social media, email, projects, and other tasks. Depending on skills and experience, virtual assistants earn $15-35 per hour.
Not sure how to start? 30 Days or Less to Virtual Assistant Success is a step-by-step course to start a successful VA business in 30 days and start making more money.

Do you like correcting others? Have your red pen handy? Get paid as a proofreader to check grammar, punctuation, and other details. From bloggers to legal transcripts, there's a good demand for proofreaders.
With the internet and a computer, you can work from home and transcribe as much or as little as you want.
TranscribeMe: a leader in audio transcription, TranscribeMe starts at $20 per audio hour.
Help a student through tutoring. Math, English, and foreign languages are some of the most sought after tutors. Tutoring is a great way to make more money while also helping a child succeed.
Coaching sports can be a lot of fun. Take your team to the finals and crush all those who would oppose the 7-8 yr olds on the Pink Dolphins soccer team.
If you don't have the time or can't make the commitment to coach, becoming a referee is a good alternative. Games are typically on weekends, and you can make decent money per hour/game. Just beware of heckling parents.
Play an instrument or sing? Earn money giving music lessons while sharing your passion.
Teach a Class in Person
Share your knowledge or expertise with others. Local community colleges are constantly looking for instructors and classes.
Create an Online Course
Similar to teaching in person, teaching online has some additional passive income rewards. Creating an online class is a lot of work upfront, but afterward, you can earn residual income from it.
Teachable: An easy to use platform for creating and selling your online course.
Most people don't know that I was a substitute teacher in college. I had one day a week with no classes. If a teacher was out sick I would get a call from the school district at 5:30 am asking if I could come in. I made about $80 a day without certification. With certification, you can easily make over $100 a day. The downside of substitute teaching is that requests are often last minute.
Become a Private Investigator
How cool would it be to be Magnum PI? The mustache alone would be worth it! If you have experience in law enforcement (getting arrested does not count), insurance fraud, workers compensation, or another specialty, then becoming an on-demand PI could be a good gig.
Trustify: An investigator network, paying $30 per hour, for surveillance and investigation cases.
Voiceover work includes audio books, documentaries, cartoons, radio, video games, telephone messages, and other voice work. Necessary equipment includes a computer, internet access, a quality microphone, and a quiet no-echo space.
Voices.com: A marketplace for connecting voice actors to jobs. You can create a profile and get matched up to gigs that fit.
One of those lost skill sets, the handyman business has seen a massive increase in demand. Bob Villa has retired, but you can still watch This Old House for ideas of projects that you can help with.
A quick way to find work is to ask the question, “what needs fixing that has been on your to-do list for over 2 weeks?” Every answer you get has a high probability that they are willing to pay you to get it done.
Mow Lawns, Weeding, and Landscaping
I hate weeding! Pulling weeds is the bane of my existence. There are lots of people who dislike, or don't have time to, mow their lawn, landscape, or do other yard work. It's always easier to make money doing things that others don't want to do. Luckily grass grows back, so the work is recurring.
Shovel or Plow Snow
Depend on your location, snow removal can be very lucrative with the right weather. Location dependent, shoveling or snow blowing can earn $25-75 per hour, while plowing a driveway can run between $30-45 per storm. While the work is seasonal, you can smooth out your income by mowing lawns in the summer and attaching a plow to your truck in the winter. Note that if you start a snow removal business, your kids might not be the only ones wishing for a snow day.
Wash and Detail Cars
Wash, wax, and detail, there's a good demand to pretty up our rides. If you're offering detailing services, my advice is to target an underserved demographic with chronically messy cars, parents. Every parent is familiar with sticky door handles, Cheerios between seats, and footprints on the headrests. If your business is cleaning the interior of cars, go where the mess is.
Cleaning is another activity that some people hate to do. Cleaning companies are often priced very high in comparison to the labor costs, so there is an opportunity to pick up work. Since most people work during the day, it can be convenient to clean while they are not home. However, cleaning when the residents are not home requires trust. Start small and impress your first clients to get raving fans, who will give solid testimonials.
Similar to cleaning houses, you can make a steady side income cleaning businesses. Since you are likely cleaning when the business is closed, most cleaning is done on nights or weekends.
My parents used to clean businesses to make more money. At the time, my mother was a teacher and my father a truck driver, and they would clean offices for extra income.
Earn some extra cash watching kids and give your friends a date night. One great bonus of babysitting is that if you are babysitting at night you can earn double by completing another side hustle when the kids are sleeping! If you are considering babysitting outside of friends and family, I recommend training through the American Red Cross Babysitting & Child Care Courses.
If you are a stay at home parent, you can earn more money by providing childcare services to other parents. I have found that Pinterest is an incredible resource for cheap craft ideas to keep kids entertained. Before providing any childcare services, make sure to check with your state on current laws and any necessary certifications required.
Once you own a dog travel becomes more complicated. Step in to help pet owners enjoy their vacation, knowing that their furry friend is being well cared for.
Rover.com: The largest network of pet sitters and dog walkers. Create a profile and choose the jobs that fit your schedule.
Some people can't stand the idea of Fido sitting all day at home alone. Walk dogs to make more money, get some exercise, and put their owner's mind at ease. Provide the owner regular updates with pictures as a personal touch. “Here's Fluffy barking at a squirrel, before meeting up with the gang at the dog park.”
Rover.com: Again, a great network to find dog walking jobs.
Like the idea of training pets? It's a balance of training the pet and teaching the owner to train their pet. Getting certified as a professional dog trainer takes a long time, about 300 hours of experience, but can be extremely rewarding. Normally you under study with another trainer until you are ready to test. If you want to learn more about the process and find a trainer to shadow, check out the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers.
Sometimes combined with pet sitting, house sitting often requires you to water plants, collect mail, and maintain an active presence to deter break-ins. House sitting doesn't always pay much, but can provide a free place to stay on vacation. Just make sure that you follow the homeowner's rules and have great respect for the home.
Sell Your Stuff
Accumulated a bunch of crap? Have stuff that you no longer use or need? Sell it! One weekend we decided to throw together a garage sale and made over $350. Sell your stuff on eBay or Amazon to make a few extra bucks.
Sell Other People's Stuff
If you get good at selling things on eBay or Amazon, don't stop at selling your stuff. There are lots of people with no time or technical ability to sell their items. Offer to sell their unwanted or unused items, for a small price of course.
If you have an interest in increasing your income by selling things on eBay, check out The Beginners eBay Course from Jason Butler. Jason goes through how he sells items on eBay to help pay down $63,000 in debt.
Lend Your Clothes
Rent out your designer clothes. Each time someone rents out the designer items you get paid! Perfect for the expensive cocktail dress that you wear for a special occasion and then it sits in the closet.
Style Lend: States that you get paid 80% of the rental price every time your item rents. Requires that the item be less than 2 years of age, be an accepted brand, and be clean and stain-free.
Sell Your Crafts
I once met someone who made fairy houses from materials she found while walking her dogs. She would pick up sticks, bark, and moss, and then transform the materials into beautiful fairy houses. I think she sold them on Etsy for $50 each. If you enjoy quilting, knitting, making your own jewelry, or any type of craft, you might consider using your talents to make some extra cash.
Sell Your Skills on Fiverr
Fiverr sells services in graphic design, digital marketing, writing, editing, video, programming, and more. If you have skills in any of these areas, consider selling your services on Fiverr. Often service providers will have a cheap simple offering and then upsell additional services.
Own Rental Property
Owning rental property nets you rental income and potential appreciation over time. However, there are also huge downsides, like repairs, dealing with bad tenants, and the upfront money necessary to buy the property.
Manage Local Property
As the number of people renting increases, there is a big need for property managers. Someone has to manage all those rental properties, why not you? Property managers work with tenants, resolve issues, find new tenants, and coordinate maintenance. Be aware that some states require real estate licensing to perform some or all of the duties I mentioned.
Become a Real Estate Agent or Broker
The typical real estate commission is 6%, split between the buyer and seller agents. That's 3% each! For example, an agent on a 300k house sale earns 9k! You wouldn't have to sell very many houses to make a good income. Of course, it's not that easy, and you need a real estate license.
For online real estate license courses check out Real Estate Express.
Airbnb – Rent a Room or Host an Experience
Have an extra bedroom? List it on Airbnb to generate some income from it. You'll potentially meet people from all over the world and maybe make some new friends.
New to Airbnb, host an experience! Take a group on a local hike, a wine tasting, or a tour of your city. Get paid to introduce people to the unique spots that only locals know.
Home Cook Meals
Make up extra lunches for coworkers. Cook dinners for neighbors with long working hours. Use your cooking skills for those with no time or interest. A good way to get started is to hand out free samples with an order sheet. “Next Tuesday I'm making chicken quesadillas for the office, here's a free sample. Would you like one? $5 due tomorrow.”
Customer service is king for businesses. Companies are always looking for ways to monitor customer service and their overall presentation. As a mystery shopper they will pay you to shop at stores or eat at restaurants, and then have you review your experiences afterward. When looking for mystery shopping gigs, be aware of scams. The MSPA, formerly known as the Mystery Shopping Providers Association of North America, can be a good resource for making more money through mystery shopping.
Request a Raise
Asking for a raise can be a quick way to add income without increasing your workload. If you receive a “no”, make sure to ask what you need to accomplish in order to receive a raise. By asking you either make more money now or get a roadmap to increase your pay in the future.
Not getting compensated for the value you bring your company? Explore changing companies. If your position is in high demand, you might be able to get an upgrade in pay just through switching employers. Even if you don't change jobs, finding out what competitors pay for similar work can give you power in negotiating raises.
Ask for Work
Ask people what has been on their to-do list for over 2 weeks. Then ask how much they would pay you to complete that. Things that are on people's to-do list for over 2 weeks need to be done, but they are too busy. Usually, these are the activities that they are more willing to pay someone else to do.
